How to Take your own photos: Cell Phone Edition

Whether you are taking photos for your blog, website, or just content in general, you do not have to break the bank on equipment or photographer. Chances are you’re just getting in the swing of things and are probably not able to pay for a photographer right now. I have been taking my content photos for a while now. Although they may not be perfect, they get the job done.

Today, I am sharing the starter equipment I use to take my photos. Below I have linked the equipment I used and also tagged them on my amazon storefront under “Content Creator Equipment.”

1. Tripod and Bluetooth Remote

My tripod is like my best friend, literally! If I’m not shooting content with my best friend, Spechel; most times it’s just my tripod and I. I currently use an Aureday Tripod, as it is sturdy enough to hold my cell phone and not be blown away by the wind. Well, it hasn’t yet. Gone are the days when we used a water bottle or anything sturdy enough to prop our phones up for an Instagram-worthy photo. Maybe that was just me. Invest in that tripod! Both tripods mentioned are under $50 and well worth the investment.

2. Ring Light

Lighting is key! I specifically use my ring light when I am taking pictures inside. Of course, natural light is always good when it calls for shooting outside. The circumstances, however, do not always allow it. The ring light I am currently using is the 52W Dimmable LED Makeup Ring light by Neewer. One thing I love about this ring light is the fact that it’s compatible with both my phone and DSLR Camera. It is the perfect light for selfies, makeup applications, portrait shooting, or video recording.

I recently purchased the Neewer Dimmable Bi-Color LED Video Light kit. A plus is that it can be used with a battery or plugged into an outlet. You have the option to choose. The batteries must be purchased separately, as they are not included with the light and stand.

3. Camera Phone

I’m going to be straight up, although I have a DSLR camera (I will cover on another post), I use phone for majority of my photos. I used to have the Samsung Note 20 but recently switched to Apple. Talk to me nicely! Below are a few pictures were that were taken with my old phone (Samsung). As I have mentioned above, a tripod and good lighting equate to a great photo.

So tell me. What do you think?

4. Finding Locations

If you are not taking pictures at home, you want to make sure you choose an area that you are familiar with. For those of you that are not yet comfortable taking pictures in a public area, start with places within your neighborhood. For example, pictures two and four above were taken at my clubhouse. I would suggest calling ahead of time to ask if it is ok to take photos for your business. No matter the location, make sure to also shoot in the most optimal lighting. Other places to consider are coffee shops, public libraries, or even hotels.

I hope you found this information helpful! If you have any additional tips that you use, please share below.
